Double opt-in: slower list growth, faster revenue
Double opt-in — requiring subscribers to click a confirmation email before they join your list — feels like friction. It is. It will shrink your signup numbers by 10–20%. And it’s still the right default for almost every store. Here’s the math.
What single opt-in actually costs
Section titled “What single opt-in actually costs”Every unconfirmed address on your list is a small liability:
- Typos become hard bounces (
gmial.comis nobody’s inbox), and bounces damage your sender reputation for everyone else on the list. - Bots fill exposed forms with junk — and spam-trap addresses planted by blocklist operators look exactly like real signups.
- Forgotten signups become spam complaints six months later. A complaint costs you roughly a hundred good deliveries’ worth of reputation.
A list that’s 15% dead weight doesn’t just waste sends — it drags open rates and inbox placement down for the 85% who want your emails.
What double opt-in buys
Section titled “What double opt-in buys”A confirmed subscriber has, within minutes of meeting you, opened an email from you and clicked it. You’ve trained the inbox provider to expect engagement from this relationship — the best possible start for deliverability. Confirmed lists consistently show higher opens, fewer complaints, and more revenue per subscriber, which is the metric that pays rent.
It’s also the consent standard regulators like. Under GDPR you must be able to prove consent; a stored confirmation timestamp is the cleanest evidence there is.
Make the confirmation email work harder
Section titled “Make the confirmation email work harder”The confirmation email has the highest open rate of anything you’ll ever send (people are waiting for it). Don’t waste it:
- Subject: “Confirm your subscription” — clarity beats cleverness here.
- One button, above the fold.
- Set expectations in one sentence: what you send, how often.
When single opt-in is defensible
Section titled “When single opt-in is defensible”Checkout consent (the customer is verifiably real and just paid you) is the main case. Even then, keep the imported-and-unconfirmed crowd out of your marketing sends until they engage.
AguMail defaults every signup form to double opt-in, stores the consent trail per contact, and quarantines risky imports until they’re confirmed — releasing them is one click and a confirmation campaign.
